The Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery is a subspecialty surgical training program designed to develop advanced expertise in the surgical management of diseases of the heart, lungs, and thoracic structures. Delivered over 3 years through hospital-based training, the program combines structured academic instruction with intensive supervised operative experience in cardiothoracic procedures, including cardiac and thoracic surgery. It emphasizes competencies in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, perioperative care, critical care integration, and multidisciplinary management of complex cases, alongside research and quality improvement, preparing graduates to serve as specialist cardiothoracic surgeons within Rwanda’s health system and beyond.
