The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Sciences is a four-year, full-time programme delivered through on-campus learning combined with field-based and practical training. The programme is designed to prepare competent environmental health professionals who can identify, assess, prevent, and manage environmental health risks affecting human populations, ecosystems, and communities.

It provides competency-based training grounded in an interdisciplinary and One Health approach, recognizing the links between human, animal, and environmental health in achieving sustainable health outcomes. Students are equipped with knowledge and practical skills in environmental health assessment, risk management, disease prevention, health promotion, water and sanitation safety, food safety, occupational health, environmental pollution control, and climate change adaptation.

The programme emphasizes experiential learning through laboratory work, community engagement, internships, and research activities. Graduates are trained to critically analyze environmental health challenges, develop innovative and evidence-based solutions, and contribute to policy and practice in environmental health.

The programme also promotes lifelong learning, leadership, and entrepreneurship, preparing graduates for diverse careers in government, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and the private sector. Ultimately, it aims to produce adaptable professionals capable of responding to emerging environmental health challenges and contributing to sustainable development at local, national, and global levels.

Entry Requirements

Admission into the programme is open to graduates holding a relevant Diploma/Certificate of or Equivalent from outside of Rwanda in basic sciences with biology as core component and approved by the National Council for Higher Education. The Bachelor of Environmental Health Science with honours is a four-year program for students that have presented and passed the Rwandan secondary leaving certificate within Stream one of Mathematics and Science.

Ideal Student Profile

The Environmental Health Sciences department will admit students from all over the world, specifically targeting Rwandan, East African states members and the surround region, who are highly motivated and with an aptitude for, and interest in, solving environmental health related problems using available resources. The Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health Science with honours is a four-year program for students that have presented and passed the Rwandan secondary leaving certificate within Stream one of Mathematics and Science. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70%.
